Sunday 20th September we remembered the Last Stand of the International Brigades on 23rd September 1938 by walking up to the XV Brigade monolith in the Sierra Pandols. Thirty people walked, scrambled, talked, puffed, laughed and sometimes cried up the rocky crags in good company.
On the way up we stopped at the XV Brigade Estado Mayor in a cave and recreated a photo taken there during the battle. Then we walked further up and visited a cave hospital and finally the monolith. Angel Sola, who preserved and repaired the monolith in 2000 gave a talk on the work that he and many other volunteers did to preserve it. A relation of one of the Spaniards on the monolith joined us.
Many thanks to Associacio Lo Riu for organising and guiding the walk, and also Voluntarios de Fayon who helped recreate the photo. And especially those people who joined us. Comrade Antonio started to get a bit puffed as we scrambled up to the Estado Mayor, so I gave him my water bottle. He didn't appear up at the cave, nor did anyone bring up my water bottle. It was hot. We walked further up to the Cave hospital with me at the rear keeping an eye on those not so fit. As I reached the group and cheerfully shouted, "Where's my ******* water bottle?". Comissar Ramon happily waved it at me and I grabbed it to find that not so comradely Antonio had drunk it dry and return to base camp! Mmmm. International solidarity wobbled a bit. But comrades let me share their water and we continued up to the memorial. After lunch, now very good comrade Antonio kindly promised to fill my water bottle with beer at Alcaniz on October 17th!
The moral of this story is never ever to part with your water bottle! The minimum amount of water for a Mixed Brigade to function at the front was 6,000 litres per day! Six tonnes up the Sierra Pandols every day. According to Alun Menai Williams when he was the medic for the Washington battalion at Brunete, the men had filled their water bottles with wine before the battle instead of water, and he remembers the wounded begging for water as wine does not satisfy thirst, in fact makes it worse. Mind boggling.
It was a great day.
