"L’Internationale" performed by Barbez with Velina Brown

In July 1936, a military coup led by several fascist generals was launched against the democratically elected government of the Spanish Republic. The coup failed, but its plotters, aided by Hitler and Mussolini, continued their effort, eventually defeating the Republic in the three-year-long Spanish Civil War. Though the Spanish government was abandoned by the Western powers, 35,000 volunteers from fifty-two countries, including 2,800 Americans who came to be called the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, rushed to Spain to fight fascism. “L'Internationale," written in 1871 by a French transport worker named Eugène Pottier, was the unofficial anthem of Republican Spain.

This version is from a forthcoming collection called For Those Who Came After: Songs of Resistance from the Spanish Civil War by Barbez, which was made in collaboration with the singer Velina Brown. It was recorded live at the Japan Society on May 7, 2016 for the annual celebration of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. It has been generously supported by the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, a non-profit which preserves the legacy and memory of the Lincoln Brigade.
